The entire Philippines will be commemorating Holy Week or Lent from April 10 to 16, 2022. However, in some areas like San Fernando Pampanga, there are Holy Week traditions and Lenten season activities, like the senakulo, the real-life crucifixion of devotees, and other Lenten activities, will be canceled this year due to the pandemic.

Aside from updates on the Holy Week and Lent activities, there are also improvements in security protocols and tourism around the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ).

Holy Week News: San Fernando LGU cancels a few Lenten activities.

San Fernando Pampanga Mayor Edwin Santiago issued an Executive Order (EO) last March 28 that cancels Holy Week and Lenten season activities this year [1].

The EO indicates that Holy Week and Lenten activities like the senakulo and crucifixion of penitents will be postponed this Lent again as part of public health safety protocols during the ongoing pandemic [2].

On the other hand, this Lent encourages Holy Week masses and other religious services.

Santiago adds that minimum standard health and safety protocols will remain effective during Holy Week and Lenten activities, like wearing face masks and proper physical distancing.

Travel Update: SBMA strengthens security in Freeport Zone

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) cooperated with the Philippine National Police (PNP) in strengthening safety protocols around the Subic Bay Freeport Zone through a memorandum signed with Maritime Group (MG) last March 30 [3].

Under the Memorandum, the Subic Bay Freeport Zone and surrounding areas will receive additional protection and better management of resources. The EO also indicates that the Maritime Group shall provide experts that can maintain all of the maritime assets in Subic.

Repair works will also be shouldered by the PNP-MG as SBMA also provides quarters for the staff at the repair facility.

Also, the PNP-MG must provide assistance to SBMA in case of emergency or natural disasters in Subic and the surrounding areas.

The agreement security protocols aim to assure investors that Subic Freeport Zone is a safe and secure area for business.

Tourism News: SBMA records improvement in Freeport Zone tourism activities

Aside from improving security protocols, the SBMA also noted that tourism activities at the Subic Freeport Zone have improved over the past few months [4]

SBMA chair and administrator noted that the improvement in Subic tourism started at the Ironman competition, and recently there has been a yacht race.
