President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued a directive on Thursday, April 18, instructing the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and local government units not to penalize e-bicycles and e-tricycles on national roads. Marcos stated that more time is needed to educate the public about the ban, which will remain in effect.
Violators will not be ticketed, fined, or impounded within the grace period, which will last one month. According to the president, “The purpose is to inform them about the roads they can ply and remind them about the new policies being enforced to maintain order and safety in the streets.”
On April 15, the MMDA banned e-bicycles and e-tricycles from accessing 19 major roads in Metro Manila. This decision was made due to the alarming increase in fatal accidents and the common traffic causes. Violators will face a penalty of P2,500, and their e-bikes will be impounded if they cannot present a valid driver's license.
