The Philippines started pediatric vaccination aged 5 to 11 last February 7 after doses of Pfizer vaccines arrived. The Department of Health (DOH) announced that Pfizer would be used for pediatric vaccination, as it was the only vaccine brand that received emergency use approval. Pfizer also has a lower dosage than those previously administered to adolescents aged 12 to 17.

With parental consent, children ages 5 to 11 can be vaccinated in six vaccination sites: SM North Edsa Skydome, Fil Oil Gym in San Juan, Philippine Heart Center, Philippine Children’s Medical Center, National Children’s Hospital, and Manila Zoo.

DOH also clarified that pediatric vaccination is not mandatory and will still require the parents’ consent. With parental consent, they must also consult with a pediatrician for kids with underlying conditions.

Before pediatric vaccination day, parents are also advised to bring essential documents like birth certificates and valid ID cards. Parents were also advised to take time and explain vaccines and symptoms in an entertaining, creative way.

While at the pediatric vaccination site, children will be educated about the vaccination process and the benefits and side effects. Meanwhile, parents are also advised to monitor possible symptoms after pediatric vaccination. Parental consent forms and health declaration forms will be available at the pediatric vaccination site.

The vaccine rollout became available in areas outside Metro Manila like CALABARZON and Central Luzon on February 8. According to data from DOH, children ages 0 to 11 were found to be the most affected age bracket for the Omicron variant, with an average of 56% of pediatric cases in September alone—it grew to 69.2% this January.

Aside from this, pediatric vaccination is needed to continue face-to-face classes for the school year 2022 to 2023. Previously, DOH vaccinated adolescents aged 12 to 17 last October with parental consent and health declaration forms. They reached 77 percent of the target population—and out of this, 99% did not report any severe symptoms after vaccination. Only 0.03 have reported mild side-effects like headache, dizziness, and pain in the injected area.

The Philippines is among many countries that started pediatric vaccination like China, the United States, France, Singapore, and Malaysia.
