Metro Manila, travel, things to do, weather

The month of August starts this week, and it is expected to be generally rainy. Several memorandums that can affect commutes and travels will take effect in Metro Manila, and one is the dry run of the provincial bus ban along EDSA. The bus ban will affect trips coming from southern and northern provinces. Along with the bus ban, electric tricycles are also prohibited in major roads in Metro Manila. Lastly, frequent commuters who ride the Light Rail Transit 1 (LRT-1) can expect earlier last trips. Read on for the full details.

Weather: Two to four tropical cyclones expected this August

Local weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced that two to four tropical cyclones are expected to hit the Philippines this August [1]. This week alone, light to heavy showers are forecast to make landfall in several areas in Metro Manila. Expect the temperature to range from 28 °C to 31 °C. Skies would also be generally cloudy during the entire week [2].

For continuous updates on the weather, monitor the social media of DOST-PAGASA. Social media accounts of major airlines also announce flight cancellations due to bad weather, so check those if you have a flight this week.

Tentative dry run of EDSA provincial bus ban set on August 6 or 7

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced that the tentative start of the dry run of the EDSA provincial bus ban will be on August 6 or 7. The dry run will shortly follow the implementation of Memorandum Circular 2019-031 on August 2.

The memorandum will prevent provincial buses from entering Metro Manila by changing their terminal routes. Buses coming from the south will have their route end in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. On the other hand, buses from the north will halt in Valenzuela City. In addition, those leaving Metro Manila will be taking two rides as city buses will also be required to move to extended interim terminals [3].

E-trikes are now banned in Manila

Electric tricycles (e-trikes) are now prohibited for public use in Metro Manila following the MMDA’s advisory. The advisory states that e-trikes are considered as ‘toys’ and are not suitable for public transportation due to their weak and slow engine. As such, e-trikes can’t be used on major roads and only along subdivisions [4].

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) also adds that e-trikes can’t be registered since they are not motorized vehicles.

Travel Updates: LRT-1 last trips are now earlier

The last trip for the Light Rail Transit 1 (LRT1) is now earlier. Last trips coming from Baclaran Station would leave at 9:30 PM from Monday to Sunday and holidays. Trains from Roosevelt Station would leave at 9:45 PM from Monday to Sunday and holidays.

The change in operating hours is done to make way for system upgrades and improvement of LRT-1 trains. The operating time of first trips is not affected.
