May 1 is designated as the Labor Day—an annual regular holiday that celebrates the workers in the country. Along with the suspension of work on May 1, there are also other things to take note of when you travel to Metro Manila this week. For one, besides the usual warm temperature, commuters might also face traffic in several parts of Metro Manila due to Labor Day protests. But for a bit of good news, it is expected that the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Authority will offer free rides for workers on Labor Day. In addition, the number coding is also anticipated to be suspended on the holiday. In other news, more electronic gates will be installed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) for faster processing.
Weather News: Summer heat persists in Manila
The summer heat continues in Metro Manila with a day temperature ranging from 34 °C to 37 °C [1]. The skies would be clear around the city, so it would be a nice time to travel. However, travelers are reminded to bring necessities such as an umbrella, water, and fan to battle the heat. Slather on some sunscreen as well for protection against UV rays. When heading out, wear clothing made from light materials such as cotton to let the skin breathe.
Traffic News
Expect protests in several parts of Manila
Several labor groups are expected to hold protests on May 1. Motorists who do want to avoid traffic are advised to steer clear from usual venues for rallies such as Mendiola, Luneta, and Intramuros and find alternate routes instead [2].
MMDA expected to suspend number coding for Labor Day
Based on last year’s happenings, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is expected to suspend the number coding scheme this year on May 1 because of the expected protests around Manila [3].
Workers might get free MRT rides on Labor Day
Although no official announcement has been released yet, the MRT-Authority is anticipated to offer free rides to both public and private workers in celebration of Labor Day. This is an annual practice that the transportation system has upheld. Should the MRT push through with its tradition this year, employees can get free rides on designated hours but must present their company ID to avail [4].
Travel Update: Additional electronic gates units to be installed in NAIA
Two electronic gates (e-gates) would be installed in the NAIA Terminal 2 Departure area. The e-gates help in making transactions faster; through these gates, processing could only take 10 to 15 seconds without facing an immigration counter [5].
