A Guide for Your Entertainment: Shows and Exhibits This January 2019
These exhibits and concerts prove that Metro Manila’s art scene continues to grow.

2018 has seen the Manila arts scene grow, as proven by the exhibits and entertainment shows throughout the year. It is no different this year. In fact, as early as January there are already shows to watch and exhibits to attend. Now, if one of your goals this year is to be more cultured, these are some of the top art entertainment shows, concerts, and exhibits you have to attend. Some are new, some have already launched last year, but all of them definitely deserve your appreciation!
1. To Paint/To Weave
When: November 22, 2018 to January 20, 2019
9:00 AM to 7:00 PM (Tuesday to Saturday)

Where: The Curve Gallery, Ateneo Art Gallery, Ateneo De Manila University

In this exhibit by Vietnamese multimedia artist Thao Nguyen Phan, she bridges watercolor art and weaving by painting weaving women on Vietnamese silk. Despite the two mediums being different from each other in terms of forms and functionality, Phan finds that, as ancient forms of art, they are not only connected but also preserve and tell about culture and history.
How to get to the Ateneo Art Gallery: Take the LRT-2 and get off at Katipunan Station. From the station, walk towards the connecting bridge and take a jeepney en route to UP Diliman. It will pass by the entrance of Ateneo De Manila University. Get off at the entrance. The Ateneo Art Gallery is only a two-minute walk from there.
2. PPO 36th Concert Season (2018-2019) 45th Anniversary - Concert V

For the fifth installment of their 45th Anniversary concert, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the classical works of Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Attendees will be treated to exquisite pieces such as Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg Prelude” (The Master Singers of Nuremberg,) Schumman’s Piano Concerto, Op. 54 in A minor, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Op. 92, in A Major. The pieces will be played by Hiyas Hila on piano and the orchestra will be conducted by Yoshikazu Fukumura.
How to get there: Ride the LRT-1 or MRT-3 and get off at Taft Avenue station. Exit the station and ride a shuttle or jeepney that will pass by CCP Complex. Ask the driver to drop you off at CCP.
3. A Rach Concert
When: January 26, 2019 6:00PM

A Rach Concert claims to be the first and perhaps only concert in the world to feature all four Piano Concertos of Sergei Rachmaninoff.

It seems to be a busy month for Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, as in addition to their lineup of shows, they will also join pianist Raul M. Sunico in A Rach Concert. Also featured in the show are Yoshikazu Fukumura and Herminigildo G. Ranera, who will both serve as conductors. The repertoire includes the following pieces: Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos nos. 1-4, No. 1 in F-sharp minor, op. 1, No. 2 in C minor, op. 18, No. 3 in D minor, op. 30, and No. 4 in G minor, op. 40.
How to get there: Follow the directions that were given previously.
4. All The Lonely People
When: December 13, 2018 to January 27, 2019; 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Inspired by one of the lines in The Beatles’ song “Eleanor Rigby,” All the Lonely People is a collection of photographs that portray moments and times when people feel most alone. The exhibit contains intimate photographs by Charico Miranda Cruz that show the solitude of people in their busy everyday life. Beyond the technical aspects and aesthetic, the images will make you curious about the stories of each individual in the photo. Besides portraits, the photographer also captured images of places where he felt at peace the most, since he points out that places can also become a source of loneliness and can bring nostalgia.
How to get to Altro Mondo, The Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences: Ride the MRT and get off at Buendia station. From here, go to Shell Gasoline Station and ride a jeepney with the “Buendia – Washington” sign. Ask to be dropped off at Petron Gasoline Station at the corner of Makati Ave. and Gil Puyat Ave. Cross Gil Puyat Avenue then turn right at Dela Costa. From there, turn left at L.P. Leviste Street. The Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences is 200 meters from there.
5. The Titan
When: January 30, 2019; 8:00 PM
Where: CCP Main Theater

The show caps off Manila Symphony Orchestra’s “Year of The Titans” 2018 to 2019 concert series.

After PPO’s 45th Anniversary Concert and A Rach Concert, The Titan will complete the trilogy of classic concerts you can watch this watch. This show, which is Manila Symphony Orchestra’s season finale, will take on Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major or also known as “The Titan.” Filipino pianist Victor Asuncion will also perform Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major. The orchestra will be conducted by Arturo Molina.

6. Pastelero
When: January 12, 2019 to January 31, 2019; 6:00 PM
Where: Art Anton, G/F S Maison, Marina Way, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City

Art Anton’s year-opener exhibit “Pastelero” will feature bright pieces done with pastel. The exhibit will feature artworks from highly esteemed and published artists known for their pastel art, including Iris Babao Uy, Nik Masangcay, Julius Legaspi, Allid, Carlos Cee Cadid, Roland Castro, Buds Convocar, Bob Daniega, Celeste Lecaroz, Alvin Montano, and more.
How to get to S Maison: Ride the MRT-3 and alight at Taft Avenue Station. Exit the station and ride a jeepney heading to SM Mall of Asia. Once you arrive at the SM Mall of Asia Complex, look for a white building with a large letter “S” at the entrance. That is S Maison. Art Anton is located at its ground floor.
7. The Masters
When: November 22, 2018 to March 30, 2019
Where: The Manila Hotel
Price: Free
The Masters is the inaugural exhibit at The Manila Hotel’s Art Gallery.

As the exhibit’s name suggests, The Masters features local artists who are regarded as visionaries in the field. Each of the paintings at the exhibit reflects the distinct style of each artist and has its own stories to tell to its viewers. Ross Capili, Salvador Ching, Hermes Alegre, Fil Dela Cruz, Edgar Doctor, Mario De Rivera, Raul Lebajo, and Raul Isidro are the masters featured in the exhibit.
How to get there: From Espana, ride a jeepney plying the Pier South 15-Project 6 route. Get off at Bonifacio Drive Manila and walk to The Manila Hotel from there.
Tips for a good time:
• If you’re watching live shows, only purchase from official ticket distributors.
• There can be discounts for ticket prices if you’re a student, PWD, or senior citizen.
• Follow the rules and regulations of the venue.
• Allot an extra hour for traffic when commuting so you can arrive early at the venue.
• If you’re bringing gadgets or valuable items, make sure to keep an eye on your personal belongings at all times.
• Since of most the events are art shows, donning a more formal attire might be appropriate.
