Another week of deadlines and paperwork has ended, and now it’s time to welcome the weekends with a bang. There are many enjoyable ways to make the most out of your time: you can watch the latest movie releases, look for bargains in your favorite mall, or reconnect with friends in a cozy café. But if it’s a night of music you want, then head on to a bar for drinks and live shows! There are great bar shows in Metro Manila you cannot miss this August! Read on, get to know the performers, and see where you want to treat yourself after surviving another work week.

1. Paolo Santos and Pido

When: August 30, 2018; 9:30 PM
Where: 19 East, Muntinlupa City
Ticket price: PhP300

If there’s anything that Paolo Santos and Pido have in common, it’s their impressive guitar skills and knack for singing love songs. Paolo’s most notable song is a cover of Peter Mayer’s “Moonlight over Paris,” which propelled his career as it gained numerous radio plays. But of course, Paolo, whose soothing guitar skills earned him the nickname “Mr. Acoustic,” won’t be stuck with only his famous cover. Some of his original songs, such as “Coffee Cup” and “Close,” might also make their way into his set list.

Meanwhile, Pido is a singer-songwriter who is behind the songs “Bakit ‘Di Mo Pansin?” (Why Won’t You Notice?) and “Sweet Hello.” He has been active in the industry since the 80s and was an original member of Side A and also a part of South Border. He then ventured on a solo career, while at the same time performing with his other bands such as ArtStart, Take One, and Black Cow.

Tickets are available at the venue.

How to get to 19 East Bar and Grill: Ride a bus heading to Sucat, Parañaque then ask the driver to drop you off at the East Service road. It is located at the left side of the expressway when en route to Alabang. From there ride a jeepney heading to Bicutan, which will pass by 19 East. The bar is near Laguna Bay Inn.

2. Jay Kent

When: August 31, 2018; 7:15 PM
Where: El Calle, Resorts World Manila
Ticket price: Free entrance

British-Filipina singer Jay Kent might not be a familiar name, but this 16 year old was actually one of our country’s representatives at the 2016 Euro Pop Singing Competition in Berlin, Germany, where she came in fifth. Back in the country, she has gained many fans through her covers of popular music such as Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.” Her artistry further emerged when she released original songs on Youtube. In her show in El Calle, you can catch her perform both famous song covers and originals!

How to get to El Calle: Ride the MRT-3 and get off at Taft Avenue Station. Walk towards the passageway near McDonald’s then ride a Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 shuttle commuter bus. Ask the driver to drop you off at Resorts World Manila. Fare is around PhP20. El Calle is located near the Starbucks in the complex.

3. Black Cows, The Steely Dan Tribute

When: August 31, 2018; 9:00 PM
Where: 19 East, Muntinlupa City
Ticket price: Free

Here’s a fun fact: Black Cows is led by Pido Lalimarmo, the same musician mentioned earlier in this article. Black Cows is a tribute band for the 70s American rock band Steely Dan. Steely Dan was famous for writing incredible lyrics, and the group is also credited with redefining the jazz-rock genre during their time. Some of their popular songs include “Do It Again,” “Peg,” “Deacon Blues,” and “Cousin Dupree.”

How to get to 19 East: Follow directions that were given previously.

4. Joey G

When: August 31, 2018; 10:00 PM
Where: 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub, Ortigas Center
Ticket price: Free entrance

Being in the industry for 30 years, Joey G is already a well-established name in the metro’s live music scene. He has performed in major arenas and bars in the span of his career as both the frontman of Side A and as a solo artist. He was the voice behind “Forevermore” and “Set You Free”—familiar songs of love and heartbreak that we all grew up to. This weekend, his timeless vocals will be serenading everyone in 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub.

How to get to 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub: Ride the MRT-3 and get off at the Ortigas Station. Exit via the northbound side to SM Megamall. From the mall, walk in the direction of St. Francis Square and continue straight ahead until you see El Pueblo. It is the small compound with colorful buildings. 12 Monkeys is within the compound. You can see the sign of the bar immediately.

5. 3D: Ebe Dancel, Johnoy Danao, Bullet Dumas

When: August 31, 2018; 9:00 PM
Where: Conspiracy Garden Cafe, Visayas Avenue, Quezon City
Ticket price: PhP350

Because of the 2017 movie I’m Drunk, I Love You which featured the bittersweet song “Burnout,” the song gained popularity among millennials. It is originally a song by Sugarfree, but the version that captured the younger people’s attention was the one recorded by 3D. The name of the band came from the last names of the singers in collaboration: Dancel, Danao, and Dumas. Ebe Dancel was part of the band Sugarfree and left in 2011 to become a solo artist. Meanwhile, Johnoy Danao is a singer-songwriter and a live-acoustic performer. Lastly, Dumas is a singer recognized for his contemporary folk style which is rare in the local music scene.

How to get to Conspiracy Garden Cafe: Ride the MRT and alight at the North Station. Head towards SM North EDSA and walk to the jeepney terminal located at the ground floor. There are jeepneys there heading to Visayas Ave, where Conspiracy Garden Cafe is located. Drop off at the Conspiracy Garden Cafe. One nearby landmark you can look for is BDO.
