This Week in Metro Manila (June 18 to 24, 2018)

The rainy season was officially welcomed by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) [1], and this was evident when Metro Manila received intense rain throughout the past week. While tropical depression Domeng is already out of the country, a thunderstorm or two is still expected to fall from Monday to Friday, although the sun would be peeking from the clouds even on these days. To prepare for the weather, bring an umbrella and other rain protective gear.

Day temperature is expected to range between 31° to 33 °C [2]. This relatively low temperature means it’s time to take out the sweaters, hoodies, and jackets out of the closet since these pieces of clothing are essentials in coping with the cold breeze that comes with the rain.

While there are currently no major news on road works and other issues that can affect the traffic situation this week, motorists are reminded to be cautious when in areas that can get easily flooded during the rainy season. Areas such as España, Cainta, Marikina, Quezon City, Pasay, and Mandaluyong are in the Metro Manila Development Authority’s (MMDA) list of identified flood-prone areas [3]. Also be reminded that roads might be slippery due to the rain, so drive safely.

After the news about jewelry smugglers broke last month, seven new x-ray machines were installed in three terminals in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). The x-ray machines are set to look for taxable items in carry-on bags, such as foreign currency, watches, jewelry, and luxury bags, as well as illegal drugs and other prohibited items. This bag examination is non-intrusive, as the practice of opening of bags for inspection has been suspended since April last year [4].

On June 24, a wreath laying ceremony will be conducted at Rizal Park. As such, tourists who will visit the park should expect a big crowd. Since Manila mayor Joseph Estrada is expected to attend, tight security is also likely to be implemented in the area on that day.
