5 Manila Art Exhibits You Should Absolutely Visit this April
Feast your eyes and soul on the works of Manila’s finest artists!

The local art industry is brimming with fresh and young ideas as well as seasoned talents bursting with creativity and passion. Much like performers and musicians, sculptors, painters, and visual artists also deserve the recognition that any prized artist should have for his or her craft. We, the beguiled spectators, can show some love in many ways without spending money at auctions or buying expensive works. Art is all around us, and looking at, understanding, and appreciating it doesn’t have to come at a price if you know where to look.
Below are some Manila art exhibits for 2018 that you can head to this month. Who knows? Going to one might inspire you to unleash the artist within you as well!
1. Bruce Conner: Out Of Body
When: February 24 to June 3
Where: Bellas Artes Outpost, 2/F The Alley at Karrivin, 2316 Chino Roces Ave, Makati
Price: Free Admission
Bruce Conner died in 2008, and he leaves a legacy worth celebrating in this rare exhibit.

The phrase “out-of-body experience” is usually presented to us as something scary and paranormal in popular media. But who knew that something frightening can inspire artists to make something beautiful? One such exhibit that proves this is Bruce Conner: Out of Body. The American artist’s exhibit stages Eastern and Western concepts of spirituality in an attempt to break free from the physical towards the ethereal.
How to get to Bellas Artes Outpost: Ride the MRT and get off at Magallanes station. From there, take a jeepney heading to PRC. Ask the driver to drop you off at Karrivin Plaza. Go to the 2nd floor, The Alley at Karrivin, which is where you will find Bellas Artes Outpost.
2. Imagining Memory: Between Anaesthesia and Amnesia
When: March 22 to April 21; 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Where: 1335Mabini, Unit C1B Karrivin Plaza, Chino Roces Extension Avenue, Makati
Price: Free Admission
The group exhibition deals with how power and knowledge are correlated to one another.

Imagining Memory: Between Anaesthesia and Amnesia’s main theme is how acronyms, slogans, and abbreviations are instruments to writing, writing off, and re-writing memory. Local artists Cian Dayrit and Nikki Luna collaborate with foreign artists Yoshinori Niwa and Hu Yun to explain the power of memory and how it defines and forms a community.
Each artist also had his or her own take on the theme—Dayrit’s works focus on globalized economy and its impacts and powerful ideology; Luna’s works were inspired by the notion of feminism and the particular disrespect for female bodies; Niwa’s works deal with the notion of nationhood and defining our collective identity; and Yun’s works tackle the issue of modernity and where it will go from here moving forward.

3. 10 Minutes 350° F
When: March 22 to April 22
Where: Altro Mondo Gallery, 3/F Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences, Legazpi Street, Makati
Price: Free Admission
The exhibit offers a unique experience that fuses art with cooking.

The creation of food is undeniably a craft in itself. In 10 minutes 350° F, three upcoming contemporary artists Gale Encarnacion, Ian Cadiong, and Is Jumalon give their own takes on informative “recipes” and the art of food.
These three artists have different mediums of art with which to display their respective skills: Ian Cadiong worked his way with watercolor (adding salt and pepper), Gale Encarnacion has created shapes and forms using different food and items (knead, twist, and measure), and Is Jumalon illustrated the similarities between the ruins of the Zamboanga siege and her own take on the image (preserve).
How to get to Altro Mondo Gallery: From LRT Buendia, ride a jeep heading to Guadalupe. Get off at Pacific Star Building and walk towards Leviste Street. Altro Mondo can be found at the third floor of The Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences.
4. Religion | Rinne Abrugena
When: March 24 to April 22
Where: 135 Congressional Ave. Quezon City
Price: Free Admission
Religion has always been a popular theme among artworks.

In her first solo exhibit at Vetro, Katherine Abrugena, also known as Rinne, uses her Catholic upbringing in coming up with her own interpretations of several Catholic symbols, such as the Sto. Nino, church altars, the concept of afterlife, and the calmness of rituals. The works in her exhibit are her artistic attempts to bridge the divine and the personal, to speculate on our faith and why we hold them dear.
How to get to Vetro: From Espana or Mabuhay Rotonda, take a jeep heading to Project 8 Quezon City and ask the driver to drop you off at Congressional Avenue. Vetro is located within the area.
5. Manila FAME
When: April 19 to April 21; 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Where: World Trade Center, Pasay City
Price: PhP500 Regular; PhP400 Senior Citizen; PhP250 Student
Manila FAME began its first show in 1983, and has since continued to trail-blaze with marvelous, all-original designs and artworks.

Manila FAME is an international exhibition and trade show of fine works of fashion, architectural, interior pieces, and many more. The bi-annual arts and design event will be having its first show of the year. Through the show, local artisans and craftsmen get to showcase their creative works to both locals and foreign visitors. On its 67th show, the Manila FAME will continue to be a platform for both skilled and rookie artisans while enriching their creativity as well.
How to get to World Trade Center: Ride the MRT and get off at Gil Puyat/Buendia station. Then ride a bus (Buendia-Ayala-Leveriza) or a jeepney heading to SM Mall of Asia or Roxas Boulevard, and ask the driver to drop you off at World Trade Center.

Tips for ticket purchasing and viewing:
- Follow the Facebook page of the artist or the gallery to be updated about the exhibit.
- Observe the rules and regulation of the venue particularly regarding what’s allowed and prohibited within the premise.
- If you’re commuting to the venue and you’re unfamiliar with the area, search for directions online. You can also download a map of the area in Google Maps which you can access offline.
- Always adjust your travel time as Metro Manila has unpredictable traffic. Give an extra hour in case of heavy traffic.
- Keep an eye on your belongings while inside the venue.
