ube desserts in Metro Manila

Even before the Pantone Color Institute announced PANTONE 18-3838 or Ultra Violet as the color of the year, we Filipinos have already been familiar with this polarizing color as it reminds us of a local favorite: ube. Ube or purple yam has long been part of our dining table, from the sweet ube halaya (purple yam jam) to the sticky ube kalamay (purple yam rice cake). And of course, no halo halo (shaved ice dessert with mixed fruits and milk) will be complete without ube in it.

Aside from these common desserts, many restaurants have also elevated ube to new heights; thus giving us something to look forward to every time we eat out. If you’re curious to taste and see ube’s new forms, read on!

1. Cheesy Ube by Eggettes & Co.

A fan of Hong Kong’s egg waffles? You can go to Eggettes & Co. if you’re craving for the famous street food. Their Cheesy Ube Eggette Sundae is a perfect mix of Filipino and Hong Kong favorites. It consists of an egg waffle that is crisp to the bite but still chewy inside, topped with a huge dollop of ube ice cream and sprinkled with cereals and a double serving of cheese for added crunch and flavor.

If one scoop (PhP130) of the ube ice cream is not enough, you can have two scoops (PhP175) perfect for sharing.

2. Ube Yam Pastel By Empingao

To cleanse your palate after trying these savory dishes, the restaurant also has its own unique ube dessert to offer: Ube Yam Pastel (PhP260).

A pastel is similar to our empanada (stuffed pastry), but the former has a thinner and crunchier puff pastry. Empingao’s version is stuffed with purple yam and topped with a generous serving of whipped cream and dulce de leche (caramel) on the side.
