If one of your new year’s resolutions is to break free from your old style and try something new, then you’re reading the right article. This year, we leave behind off-shoulder tops, light denim pants, patches, tassel earrings, and other trends from 2017 and welcome the new trends coming our way.

Below are some of the fashion trends that experts predict will make waves all over our social media feeds and the streets.

1. Ultra Violet Pieces

Last year, we saw millennial pink everywhere. This year, a stronger hue is dethroning the soft pink color, and this new shade to watch out for is Ultra Violet. You might find it familiar, because it is—it’s the color of the year set by Pantone. Several major designer brands such as Rochas and Zadig & Voltaire had already featured the popular color in their Spring 2018 collection.

This color is not that hard to pull off. You can contrast light and dark purple hues in one outfit or stick to one violet piece to add a pop of color to your look.

Where to get the look:
Fashionistas can channel the late pop icon Prince through a Forever 21 Prince graphic tee ($19.90 or estimated to be PhP1,012.81) pictured above in the singer’s signature color.

2. 80s Satin Dresses

Anyone who grew up during the 80s might be familiar with satin dresses as this trend was popular during that time and were common sights in proms or weddings. The younger generation might be familiar with satin dresses through movies from the 80s such as Pretty in Pink.

According to predictions by several fashion websites, satin dresses will resurface this year. The modern take on the 30-year-old trend does not stray away from the original, although it would be less frilly compared to what women wore back then.

Where to get the look:
For a satin dress that does not scream “prom,” the purple piece from Mango ($29.99 or PhP1,526.34) pictured above might be ideal as it has a boxy silhouette and only have minimal ruffles on the sleeves.

3. Oversized Jewelry

If you’re an accessories person, this year you can go bigger and bolder! (Image: Zara)

It is a known fact that any outfit would not be complete without accessories as they add an extra oomph to the overall appeal of a look. This year, accessorizing will be more fun and flashy with oversized jewelry. From long chandelier earrings to bauble necklaces, accessories will be anything but humble.

If you’re gunning for a simple look but still want to elevate your style, try pairing a plain top with a piece of oversized jewelry with an outrageous design. Avoid going overboard by sticking to one oversized item, as one is already eye-catching enough.

Where to get the look:
Zara’s pompom earrings (PhP595) can be sported for a playful and chic look.

4. Berets

Thanks to several celebrities and supermodels such as Rihanna and Bella Hadid, the beret will be making a comeback. The popular hat, which originated in France and Spain, comes in different styles and textures. It can also be made out of various materials such as leather, wool, and velvet.

The color of the beret you don can help you achieve the look you want. For instance, if you want to give off a girly vibe, a pastel-colored beret might do the trick. For extra fierceness, a bright red one is a good choice. If you want a classic look, black is the go-to color.

Where to get the look:
The beret from Forever 21 ($14.90 or PhP758.34) pictured above is made from wool and has an “in your dreams” embroidered design.

5. Sheer Garments

Sheer clothing has always been an essential nighttime wear, but this year fashion experts foresee that the trend will cross over to the daytime. Top things to watch out for in sheer fabric would be skirts, tops, and maxi dresses.

To make a sheer ensemble chic and elegant, pair the fabric with something solid to cover up what’s underneath. If you’re not a fan of a completely sheer outfit, you can opt for pieces with sheer cut-out details.

Where to get the look:
Pull&Bear’s denim jacket with sheer cut-out details (PhP2,295) gives the minimum peekaboo.

6. Utility Jumpsuits

If you’re a fan of the comfortableness of jumpsuits and rompers, you might find a utility jumpsuit a good addition to your closet. The one-piece staple will be coming back this year but with a twist on its silhouette. The new outline will be based on flight suits worn by soldiers and pilots but designed to be suitable for a female shape.

Where to get the look:
The utility jumpsuit ($49.97 or PhP2,543.22) from GAP pictured above has a straight silhouette and a cinched waist.

7. Balloon Sleeves

Just like with the oversized jewelry trend, this style encourages fashionistas to step up and be more flamboyant. A balloon-sleeved top might look like something worn by women from the 19th century, but several designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and JOUR/NÉ have tweaked the silhouette and have come up with several variations.

Where to get the look:
The bohemian-inspired balloon sleeved blouse (£39.00 or PhP2,811.60) pictured above from Topshop has embroidered details and intricate cut works.

8. Fringes

You can channel your inner boho chick with the return of fringes. As proof, Dior and Alexander Wang already incorporated the trend in their collections, while designers Erdem Moraliolu and Paco Rabanne added a futuristic twist by using shiny and metallic materials.

The fringe should not be confused with the tassel; the former does not have a ball-shaped top as a source and it drapes down individually from the same source.

Where to get the look:
Bershka’s fringe dress (PhP1,595.00) as seen above can be a fun party or festival dress.

9. Fanny Packs

Fanny packs can be worn around the waist or as a body bag.

Fanny packs were hot items during the 1980s and like a phoenix, they will rise from the ashes this year—thanks in part to fashion it girls like Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, and Bella Hadid.

Aside from being popularized by the above-mentioned celebrities, this trend is expected to resurface after it has been featured in Balenciaga’s fashion show. Luxury brands also have also released their own lines of fanny packs.

Where to get the look:
You don’t have to dig in your mother’s closet or buy ones from expensive brands, because you can check out Topshop’s (£18.00 or PhP1,297.66) fanny pack, pictured above.

10. Art-infused Pieces

Fashion and art often come together, as fashion is considered as art and art can be incorporated in fashion. This year, we will see more cases of the latter as several pop art works will be popular designs in fashion pieces. The trend was first seen at Versace’s Spring 2018 fashion show in a dress inspired by Andy Warhol’s style.

Where to get the look:
