Filipinos will end the month of November by celebrating Bonifacio Day, a national holiday. The week also welcomes the first day of December, and as the holiday season nears, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) enforces a stricter implementation of public utility vehicle (PUV) yellow lanes and motorcycle lanes in preparation for the expected traffic congestion. The weather will be fairly good all throughout the week as well.
Bonifacio Day
Unlike Jose Rizal, the commemoration of Bonifacio’ is focused on his birth rather than his death. This year would be the 154th birthday of Bonifacio. (Image: Gregorio Honasan)
November 30 commemorates the birth date of the father of the Philippine revolution, Andres Bonifacio. Bonifacio was the founder of the Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangang Katipunan (KKK), a group that fought for the freedom of Filipinos during the Spanish colonial period. Bonifacio Day is a national holiday which means that classes and work are suspended.

There is a yearly wreath-laying ceremony during the Bonifacio Day celebration at Monumento Circle, Caloocan City, where Bonifacio’s statue is located. Some of the major roads in Caloocan City—particularly along the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), Rizal Avenue, and Samson road leading to Bonifacio Shrine at Monumento might be closed during the celebration. It is recommended that commuters follow updates from the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for road closures and suggested alternate routes.
Commuters can also expect traffic along the Manila City Hall as there might be a wreath-laying ceremony at the Bonifacio Shrine in the area. There are no announcements of rallies that can occur during the day, but commuters should adjust their travel time just in case.

With less than a month before Christmas, MMDA will fortify their old rules regarding the two special lanes in EDSA. On November 20, MMDA started to be stricter on violators of the the rules in using the PUV yellow lane and motorcycle blue lane.
According to MMDA’s Assistant General Manager for Planning Jojo Garcia, the measure aims to ease the burden of the riding public. Through it, PUVs are allowed to swing over the yellow lane while private vehicles can only enter the lane 100 meters before turning right out of EDSA.
Motorcycle riders can take the leftmost lane of EDSA for overtaking maneuvers only. City buses will use the outermost lanes for loading and unloading while provincial buses and point-to-point (P2P) buses will take over the second lane from the sidewalk. Unloading and loading on the second lane is not allowed. A fine of PhP500 will be charged from violators.
