Quezon City celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila.

October is the Month of the Holy Rosary for Catholics, and welcoming this occasion is the Feast of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila in Quezon City, one of the biggest religious celebrations in Metro Manila. Traffic and road closure along Quezon Avenue is expected on Sunday as followers will flock to Santo Domingo Church for the grand procession.
Feast of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila

In observance of the Feast of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila, the church will conduct masses every day from September 29 to October 7, with the earliest at 5:00 AM and the latest at 7:00 PM. Novena masses will also be held from 6:50 AM to 5:30 PM. Besamanto (kissing of the robe) will happen on October 2, 4, and 6 at 7:00 PM. Finally, the event will end in a grand procession on October 8 that will start in Santo Domingo Church, Quezon City.

Throughout the celebration, commuters going northbound might experience traffic along Quezon Avenue, Araneta Avenue, and D. Tuazon. Moreover, those who are not joining the procession on Sunday are advised to avoid areas near Quezon Avenue as hundreds of devotees are expected to attend. It is also advisable for commuters to stay updated on road closings and re-routing tips from the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) by monitoring the news and the social media pages of MMDA.

Catholicism is not the only Spanish influence that stayed in the Philippines; the Filipino cuisine also carries the taste of Spain even now, more than a hundred years after the latter left. One such restaurant that explores this Spanish influence is Alba Restaurante Español. The place has been serving traditional Spanish dishes for 60 years and has four branches, one of which is located in Tomas Morato, Quezon City.
Those participating in the feast’s activities can drop by Alba Restaurante Español afterwards and enjoy house specialties such as Chorizo Fritos (homemade Spanish sausage), Gulas a la Cazuela (sautéed eelbroods in olive oil, garlic, and chili), and Gambas Al Ajillo (shrimps sautéed in olive oil, garlic, and chili). Alba Restaurante Español is open every day from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

Santo Domingo Church

To further the La Naval experience, visitors can take a trip to Santo Domingo Church and appreciate its architecture and history. The 430-year-old church complex serves as the national shrine of the Our Lady of La Naval de Manila and houses Filipino Dominicans. It is the largest church in Metro Manila and is also one of the biggest in Asia. Adding to its rich history are the earthquakes and wars that the church has withstood. On October 4, 2012, Santo Domingo Church was declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the Philippine government and the National Museum.

After participating in the activities, those who want to take home sweet baked goods can check out Wheatberry Bakery and Café, located at 84 Scout Castor corner Scout Tuazon, Quezon City. The café and bakery offers pastries and baked goodies such as chicken teriyaki roll, baguette, cupcakes, cheesecakes, brownies, meringue, and their best seller—mamon tostado (toasted fluffy sponge cake).

One of the highlights of the feast is the grand procession of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila that will end the celebration. It will be held on October 8 at 4:00 PM and will start at the Santo Domingo Church. From there it will go along Dapitan Street, D. Tuazon Street, and Quezon Avenue and will then go back to Santo Domingo Church. The Our Lady of La Naval de Manila will be accompanied by other 26 patron saints along with hundreds of devotees.
Rainy weather all week
The procession on Sunday might be a rainy one.
It will be consistently rainy throughout the week with thunderstorms expected to occur in the afternoons. The minimum temperature for the week is 24 °C and the maximum temperature is 26 °C. Those who are participating in the procession on the 8th should expect cloudy skies accompanied by rainfall and are therefore advised to be prepared for rain and to bring umbrellas or raincoats.
