June 26 is a national holiday; parts of Marcos Highway closed by June 28

This week in Metro Manila, Muslims will celebrate their Eid’l Fitr that marks the end of their month-long Ramadan on June 26. New attractions are also making its way in the metro, from a live production from Cirque du Soleil to a traveling museum all the way from Spain. The start of July will also be welcomed by unruly weather and other changes affecting traffic and daily commute.

President Rodrigo Duterte declared June 26, Monday, a national holiday, in observance of the Muslim Celebration, Eid’l Fitr or the end of Ramadan. The government aims to ‘bring the religious and cultural significance’ of the Eid’l Fitr to the masses, thus the declaration of the national holiday.
The Palace has been declaring Eid’l Fitr since 2002 to promote peace and goodwill between the Muslims and the country’s predominantly Christian population.
Muslims all over the world will end their month-long fasting with a celebration and by attending communal prayers, listening to sermons or their khutba, and giving food to the needy or their zakat al-fitr.
Marcos Highway to be closed for LRT 2 East extension project

This week, Light Rail Transit (LRT) 2 East extension will enter its second phase to start the construction of Emerald station. The continuing project will result in a closure of two lanes along Marcos Highway East and West bound, from Felix Ave. to Robinson’s Metro East. The said closure will last from June 28 to July 13, 2018.
Motorists coming from Sumulong Highway and Marcos Highway Intersection going to Cubao or C5 may take the route via Sumulong Highway to A. Bonifacio Ave. to Aurora Blvd. or via Ortigas Ave.
Motorists coming from Cubao or C5 going to Antipolo may take the route via A. Bonifacio Ave. to Sumulong Highway.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) aims to finish the new line by August 2018.
PNR fare to increase by July 1

Philippine National Railways (PNR) will welcome the month of July with a fare hike. Starting July 1, PNR will increase its minimum fare from PhP10.00 to PhP15.00, and an additional PhP5.00 for every 7 kilometers equivalent to one zone traveled.
PNR states that the said increase was long overdue and will help them raise the necessary funds to maintain their operations.

With the celebration of Eid’l Fitr of Muslim Filipinos in the country, the government is enticing the general public to use the national holiday to explore and get to know the Islam religion. For one, Muslims are known for their halal dishes or foods and drinks that are permissible to the Islamic law.
One famous halal destination is Moud Halal in Quiapo, Manila. The humble halal restaurant’s simple interior may look like a typical turo-turo or eatery but their roasted chicken is ranked as one of the best in the city. Aside from the freshly roasted chicken best paired with their kabsa rice, Moud Halal also offers various Maranao dishes that are well-loved by the nearby Muslim community. The restaurant is also known to be packed with patrons especially during Eid’l Fitr as it is near the famed Golden Mosque in Manila.

El Museo del Prado en Filipinas

A glimpse of El Museo del Prado en Filipinas or The Prado Museum can now be seen in the Philippines at the Plaza Roma in Intramuros until the end of July. The exhibit features 53 life-sized high definition photographs of the masterpieces from Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, Spain.
Some of the artworks displayed dating as far back as the 12th to the 19th centuries were created by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Fra Angelico, Francisco de Goya, and even our very own Juan Luna. The exhibit was inaugurated during the Día del Libro book festival that opened last April 22 in Ayala Triangle, Makati City. The project is carried out by the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, Instituto Cervantes de Manila, and Intramuros Administration.
TORUK – The First Flight

Canadian entertainment company, Cirque du Soleil, is bringing their production of “TORUK—The First Flight” in Manila at the Mall of Asia Arena from June 23 until July 2.
Based on James Cameron’s wildly successful film Avatar, TORUK takes place a thousand years before the movie and follows the story of Ralu, Entu, and Tsyal, and their quest to save the Sacred Tree of Souls.
Audience will be treated with Cirque du Soleil’s signature grandiose production, known for their acrobatics and puppetry, and the jaw-dropping world of the Avatars. Ticket starts at PhP1,500.
Weather Advisory for June 26 to July 2
Rains and thunderstorms will welcome the month of July.
Early this week in the Metro, the skies will mostly be cloudy but overall good weather can be expected in the morning with some thunderstorms at night. In the latter part of the week, the sunshine may peep a bit but rains and thunderstorms are more likely to reign in the morning and through the night. The unruly weather is expected to continue all throughout the weekend. Daily commuters are advised to bring an umbrella and to anticipate a heavy flow of traffic due to the bad weather.
