Kids and kids at heart might want to catch The BFG, now showing this weekend. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this live action film is the movie adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1982 children’s book. It follows the story of how Sophie, a young orphan girl, discovers a gentle giant who she nicknames Big Friendly Giant (BFG). The BFG takes her to Giant Country, and together they hatch a plan to stop the other giants from terrorizing the children of England.

Meanwhile, sporty and adventurous types might enjoy The Shallows. This thriller stars Blake Lively as Nancy, a medical student who surfs alone in a secluded beach in Mexico. Suddenly, a great white shark attacks her and she must rely on her survival instincts to stay alive.
Are you game for something spontaneous? Then Anthology Night 2 might be for you. For an entrance fee of PhP300, you can get the chance to perform for five to seven minutes in their open- mic event. But shy types could always sit back, relax, and just watch as other brave souls show their literary and musical talents on the spot.
The event is staged by Langgam Performance Troupe and is part of their ongoing fundraising efforts for the arts. Catch it this August 13, 6:00 PM at The Open Space, 134 Jupiter St., Makati.

If you want to revisit a popular children’s story, Repertory Philippines will present Hansel & Gretel starting August 13. The play will be shown every Saturday and Sunday, 3:30 PM at the Onstage Theatre of Greenbelt Mall 1. The production is an adaptation of the opera written by nineteenth-century composer Engelbert Humperdinck. Tickets range from PhP418 to PhP627 and are available at TicketWorld.

American artist Charlie Puth will entertain his Filipino fans this August 14, 8:00 PM at the Kia Theatre. The 24-year-old singer is the voice behind Billboard hits like “One Call Away” and “Marvin Gaye.” The concert is part of Puth’s Nine Track Mind Tour 2016. Tickets range from PhP848 to PhP3,710 and can be bought from TicketNet.

Meanwhile, lovers of ‘70s soul music can take a trip down memory lane in The Stylistics and The Main Ingredient concert featuring Cuba Gooding Sr. They will perform their hit songs like “You Make Me Feel Brand New” and “You are Everything,” to name a few. Catch them live this August 14, 8:00 PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets range from PhP1,060 and PhP4,755 and can be bought from TicketNet.
This weekend, history lovers can visit the Object Travelogue/Dialogue exhibition at the Ground Floor Gallery of the Ayala Museum. Visitors can see paintings from Fernando Amorsolo and Juan Luna as well as indigenous items which have been loaned to exhibitions in New York, Singapore, Paris and Australia. The exhibit runs until August 21.

Meanwhile, art enthusiasts can head to the third floor Exhibition Hall of the Ayala Museum to check out The Diary of Tetsuya Noda: Steven Co Collection. For the first time ever, award-winning Japanese artist Tetsuya Noda will be showing his work to a Filipino audience. The collection is Noda’s “visual autobiography” using photography, woodblock, and silkscreen printing techniques. The exhibit runs until August 28.
Basic admission rates range from PhP150 to PhP350, while entrance is free for Ayala Museum members. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Poker players can compete at the APT Poker Weekend Series from now until August 17 at the APT Poker Room of the Waterfront Manila Pavilion Hotel and Casino. Main events start at 1:00 PM from August 12-14, while buy-in rates range from PhP3,000 to PhP25,000 for all events. The Manila Pavilion is also offering Special APT Player Only Rates for those who wish to stay at the hotel for the event. Room rates range from PhP3,600 to PhP8,000 net per night.
