Movies
It’s double the romantic trouble in The Achy Breaky Hearts.
A love triangle is brewing in The Achy Breaky Hearts, the latest romantic comedy from Star Cinema. Jodie Sta. Maria stars as Chinggay, a 30-something single woman who soon finds herself torn between two lovers. Who will eventually win her heart? Is it her friend Ryan (Ian Veneracion) of #TeamTisoy or her ex-boyfriend Frank (Richard Yap) of #TeamChinoy? Watch their love story unfold in The Achy Breaky Hearts, now showing in cinemas nationwide.
Tarzan heeds the call of the jungle in The Legend of Tarzan.
Also showing this weekend is The Legend of Tarzan. After leaving the African jungle, Tarzan now lives a genteel life in London with his wife Jane Porter. But a new mission lures him back home to investigate mining activities in Congo.The movie stars Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie and is directed by David Yates.
Theater
Binyag: Virgin Labfest 2016 offers a fresh view of theater.
If the raw and real energy of the theater appeals to you more than the movies, you might want to head on over to Binyag: Virgin Labfest 2016. In this annual festival, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Writer’s Bloc, Inc., and Tanghalang Pilipino come together to present to the public plays that have never been staged or published before. From June 29 until July 17, five sets of plays composed of three one-act plays will be shown at Tanghalang Huseng Batute of the CCP Studio Theater. Films which were originally plays will also be screened at the Tanghalang Manuel Conde in the CCP Dream Theater.
For general admission, tickets for the plays are priced at PhP360.50 while film tickets are at PhP154.50.
The Female Heart: a tale of love, hope and despair
From July 1 to 10, UP Playwrights’ Theatre (UPPT) will also stage The Female Heart at the Wilfrido Ma.G uerrero Theater of the University of the Philippines Diliman. Directed by Banaue Miclat-Janssen, the play is about siblings Adelfa and Anghel, who struggle with extreme poverty in the Smokey Mountain landfill during the late 80’s.
Regular tickets are at PhP500, while tickets for UP students and employees are at PhP200.
Concerts
Joey G and Nina team up for their Versions and Verses concert.
Soul siren Nina and Side A vocalist Joey Generoso team up for a unique concert in Versions and Verses by Joey G and Nina. Joey G was the former vocalist of Side A band before going solo last year, while Nina rose to fame in the acoustic scene in the early 2000’s. They will treat their fans to renditions of each other’s songs this July 1, 8:00 PM at the Music Museum. Ticket prices range from PhP1,000 to PhP3,000.
Art Exhibits
Lawig: A peek into Negros and Panay
Interested in the arts? Then check out the Lawig Exhibit at the Bulwagang Fernando Amorsolo (Small Gallery) of the CCP before it closes this Sunday, July 3, 6:00 PM. Artists Moreen Austria and Peter James Fantinalgo will put up sculptures and installations which explore the relations between Negros and Panay. The exhibit is open to the public from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Tuesday to Sunday.

Meanwhile, Franz Marion Vocalan dispels the notion of graffiti art as only fit for the streets. His recent works will be displayed in his first solo exhibit, No Reason To Be Bored from now until July 7 at the White Gallery of the Kulay-Diwa Gallery of Philippine Contemporary Art in Sucat, Parañaque.
