Valentine’s Day is often viewed as an occasion for romantic couples and falling-in love. It is that time of the year when shops are heavily decorated with hearts, flowers, Cupid figures, and everything red, and when roses and chocolates sales are at their highest. And while celebrating the Day with a nice, lovely date with your partner is without a doubt wonderful, Valentine’s can also be a good time to express and show love to those who have always mean to you most—your family.

Love, in all its beauty and perfection, can be best demonstrated within a family. Our parents and siblings are our first sources and models of love and so it’s absolutely fitting to show them on Valentine’s Day that we appreciate the love and care that they have for us. And for those who already have families of their own, why not plan a love-filled family activity this February 14? Whether you are single or in a relationship, you can make Valentine’s Day a celebration of the gift of love by spending it with your loved ones.

Let’s take a look at some ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day as a family.

Catch a fun flick

Action, horror, or comedy? Find a genre that the whole family can enjoy and spend Valentine’s Day together with some good movie and crisp popcorn. And if you have extra to spend, watch each other’s favorite flick that’s currently showing in the cinemas. If you prefer watching in the comfort of your home, a DVD marathon is also a fun idea. You can even watch in DVD some old series you used to follow on TV for some “throwback” time.

Bring back some memories and revisit Dawson’s Creek or Friends with your siblings or some old family-oriented sitcoms like Seventh Heaven and Secret World of Alex Mack if you have kids. You can also do some bingewatching and catch up on that TV series you have been wanting to watch for so long. Have a Game of Thrones marathon or rewatch all the Aldub Kalyeserye episodes that gave you the most kilig.

The family that plays together, stays together

How about breaking a sweat outdoors this Valentine’s? Nothing beats a fun physical activity done with the family. A family is a team and so team sports are perfect. You do not only foster unity and solidarity doing sports and games together. Experiencing the thrill of facing challenges and the joy of winning together is simply priceless.

So take that shot or make a spike and share high fives with your kids or sibs! Add more fun by inviting your relatives or family friends. You can also play other games like badminton, billiards, bowling, board games, foosball, and the like. Whether you choose to play outdoors or head to the arcades for some games, playing with your brood is a good way to activate your hearts this Valentine’s.

Enjoy romantic views and take family photos

Romantic scenic spots are not only great for couples, but for families too! Go out of town or find some picturesque spots in your area. Enjoy sunrise and sunset views in the beach, have a picnic on a hill or by the lake, drive down to the countryside, visit landscaped parks and commune with the greens, or travel anywhere where the view is Instagram-worthy. A good bonding time in a nice setting and having it captured on camera is truly a lovely way to create memories on Valentine’s Day as a family.

DIY some Valentine sweet treats and theme decors

While couples are celebrating the day with chocolates and flowers, your family can make some Valentine-themed projects like baking sweets and decorating your house. Search for some recipes on the internet and bake some heart-shaped chocolate cookies and other sweet treats. Decorate your dinner table with flowers or some romantic candles. Make some Cupid and heart cut-outs and post or hang them around your home sweet home.

These cooking and craft projects will create warm Valentine’s Day memories for your family the way preparing for Christmas Day or birthdays do. You can also “Spread the love” and share some of your baked goodies with your relatives and dear friends.

Visit your grandparents and show them some well-deserved love

A really heartwarming way to celebrate Valentine’s as a family is by visiting your grandparents. Cook for them, bring them flowers and sweets, and hand them some Valentine cards with your messages of love. Our old folks deserve to be appreciated every day, but make them enjoy Valentine’s Day even more by reassuring them of your love, care, and appreciation.

A nice gift for them would be to have their old wedding photo enlarged, enhanced, and framed. Bring them red heart balloons, have your photo taken with them, show them some love!

We don’t have to limit Valentine’s Day celebration to just love between couples. The season is also a good opportunity to express love to your family especially if you’re the type who does not normally say ‘I love you’ to your loved ones. There are many ways to show and spread love this heart’s day. Celebrating family love is a good reminder that home is where the heart is. And where your heart is, there love lives—a love that is definitely worth celebrating!
