Cebu continues to have exciting offerings, despite traffic and flooding.

Traffic and flooding in Cebu City will hopefully have solutions with the proposed creation of an interagency traffic council and various flood control projects. On the other hand, a resort in a northern Cebu town promises to attract visitors with a unique and trendy activity. Lastly, theater enthusiasts can catch a Bisrock play before its Manila premiere.

Department of Transportation (DoTR) Undersecretary Thomas Orbos has proposed the creation of an Interagency Council on Traffic (IACT) to address traffic woes in metro Cebu. Orbos made the proposal during his keynote speech last October 25 at the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) general membership meeting.

The IACT would bring together all government agencies tasked with handling traffic like the Philippine National Police, Land Transportation Office, and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. They will collaborate with local government leaders to solve traffic problems.

For a taste of delectable local food, diners can head to Rustic Chef’s Favorites (Balay Habhaban). This family-owned and operated restaurant serves Filipino cuisine. Best sellers include grilled pork ribs, rustic manok kumiriw (chicken cordon bleu), and pork lauya (stew). Set meals range from PhP80 to PhP250, while habhab (pig-out) meals range from PhP250 to PhP450.

Rustic Chef’s Favorites is located at MV Patalingjug Jr. Avenue, Lapu-Lapu City. They are open Mondays to Sundays from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Travelers who want a unique kind of staycation for the weekend can visit Formosa Camp Resort. Located in Bagsawe, Tuburan, Cebu, the camp is a two-hour drive away from the city. Visitors can go glamping and rent up to six tents at the resort. They have two-room tents good for four people, and one-room tents good for two people. They have a rest house with five air-conditioned rooms which can be rented from PhP1,500 to PhP4,000 per night, or PhP15,000 per night for the whole place. They also have a swimming pool for day use at PhP100 per head.

Those looking to have a bite of moron (chocolate-milk sticky rice cake) need not go all the way to Leyte to enjoy this delicacy. Local supplier V&I Special Chocolate Moron Cebusells this homemade moron at PhP90 for a pack of 10 pieces. They also sell ube kalamay (purple yam-flavored sticky sweet rice delicacy in a coconut shell) and binagol (purple yam pudding).

V&I does meet-ups at Gaisano Mactan, Parkmall, Gaisano Tabunok, and anywhere in Cebu City. They also do bus shipping to northern and southern Cebu.

Locals and tourists can enjoy a Bisrock (Bisaya rock) jukebox musical in a show dubbed Gugmang Giatay (Damned Love) this November 10, 8:00 PM at Teatro Casino, Casino Filipino Cebu at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino.

Gugmang Giatay revolves around Undo, Inday, Rihanna, Charing, and Ben as they go through the highs and lows of being in love. The play is written by Jude Gitamondoc and Rowell “Medyo Maldito” Ucat.

The one-night only event will be held before the play debuts in Manila this November 26. Gugmang Giatay is presented by Casino Filipino Cebu, 2TinCans Philippines, Inc., and Offbeats Production.

Tips for Travelers

Officials from the Philippine National Police Region VIII say that southern Cebu remains secure from terrorist threats. This is despite travel advisories issued by the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warning citizens against non-essential travel to Central Visayas, Camiguin, Dinagat, and Siargao due to activities by insurgent groups.

While they have not received reports of armed men in southern Cebu, PNP Region 7 Chief Senior Supt. Jonathan Cabal has said they won’t treat a terrorist threat as something to be ignored.

Canyoneering activities in Kawasan Falls, Badian is one of the many tourist attractions in southern Cebu.

The Department of Public Works and Highways Region 7 (DPWH-7) will spend a total of PhP1.15 billion for dredging, desilting, and de-clogging projects in Cebu City. These flood control projects will be implemented before the end of 2017 or early 2018.

Among the creeks covered by the plan are Mahiga Creek and Tejero Creek. Cebu City Councilor Jerry Giuardo has said that informal settlers occupying riverbanks and danger zones will have to be moved to a relocation site.

DPWH-7 will secure the services of contractors to carry out the planned flood control projects.
