It’s hard to miss their big neon sign when you pass by the Banilad flyover. Bold and colorful letters spell out Zink, a new fitness studio in Cebu City that promises to leave out the “work” in working out.

Located on the second floor of the Banilad Town Center, Zink offers indoor cycling, high intensity interval training (HIIT), Total Resistance eXercise (TRX), and dance classes all in one spot. The studio, which is 220 sq. m. big, consists of a dedicated indoor cycling studio and Studio Z, which is for dance, TRX, and HIIT classes. The indoor cycling studio can accommodate 30 people while the adjacent Studio Z can hold up to 20 people.

The walk-in rate at Zink is PhP250, while unlimited classes for one month cost PhP1,999. There is also a one-year package that allows members to enjoy even lower rates. On average, Zink trainers hold 10 to 13 classes per day from Monday to Sunday. Classes start as early as 6:30 AM and as late as 7:30 PM.

The Z in Zink

Zink was conceptualized back in May 2016 by Elizalde “Zalde” Berdon, together with his two co-owners. Initially, the project only involved an indoor cycling studio, but they decided to offer more than that by leveraging Zalde’s vast experience in creating group fitness programs. “The goal really was to take away the ‘work’ in the workout and make it fun so people will be addicted,” Zalde explained. And with that, they opened Zink last November 8, 2016.

Stationary bikes, upbeat music, and neon lights combine to create a high-energy indoor cycling workout at Zink.

One of Zink’s main offerings is the indoor cycling program. Thanks to Arianna Grande’s “Side to Side” music video, indoor cycling, also called spinning, has risen to popularity as of late. But Zalde explains that it is not just a trend, but rather a workout which has been proven to be effective since the mid-1980s.

An indoor cycling session at Zink lasts 50 minutes. Participants pedal away on their stationary bikes following their trainers’ instructions. The session starts with students biking from a seated position. As the class progresses, they start to pedal faster, and the instructor introduces varied movements like standing flat or doing the standing hill climb. The instructor tells the class about the bike resistance and heart rate to aim for. On the bikes’ handle bars, riders can see their heart rate from a monitor, as well as adjust their bike’s resistance by turning a knob. Loud music and neon lights add to the energy of the intense workout.

For those looking to challenge what their bodies can do, Zink also has HIIT classes. The program is composed of various exercises for working out different parts of the body, as grouped into various stations. This means that you’ll be lifting kettlebells one second, then quickly moving on to doing push-ups on a ball.

Zink also offers Zumba, a dance fitness program that originated in Colombia.

The instructor starts by demonstrating the exercise to be done for each station, emphasizing the proper way of executing the movement. After a quick warm-up session, participants perform the exercises as quickly and accurately as they can for 20 seconds, before moving on to the next station. After reaching the last stop, they are allowed a water break to recover briefly, but they have to repeat the exercises for two more rounds following that.

Fitness journey

Just about anyone embarking on their fitness journey is concerned with weight loss. This is why the indoor cycling and HIIT classes are designed to let participants burn calories even up to 13 hours after working out. Zalde shares that students who have been attending classes three to four times a week have seen results in as little as one month. And by throwing in some fun into the mix, Zalde hopes more people will get on board and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

With positive reviews a few months after opening day, it looks like Zink is on track with this goal. One of their customers, Monique Abellana Gomez, wrote on the Zink Facebook page: “If you are a busy professional struggling to find time to workout, Zink is the place for you. They have different hours of class daily with a lot of options for you to choose from. The spin class is perfect for anyone looking to crunch in a high intensity workout in under an hour!”

When asked about what advice to give for those who want to achieve their fitness goals this 2017, Zalde pointed to a quote etched on the wall of the studio: “You should have been here yesterday.” But he was also quick to add that the proof of the pudding is in the pie. “I can tell them about all the wonderful programs that we offer, the wonderful things that people say about Zink. But if they just come and try it, I don’t have to convince them.”
