Novel coronavirus cases in Western Visayas have surpassed 3,000. Of this figure, half came from local transmissions, according to the data collected by the Department of Health. To control the spread of the disease among Ilonggos, the government of Iloilo City asked assistance from the Philippine Army in ensuring that lockdowns in barangays are followed. Following the increase in COVID-19 cases in the city, three hospitals in Iloilo temporarily stopped accepting coronavirus disease-related admissions. Meanwhile, flights in Kalibo International Airport resumed commercial flight operations. Read on for more news.

Iloilo mayor taps army to patrol locked-down barangays

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas tapped Philippine Army soldiers to ensure that lockdowns in several barangays are controlled. This comes after a spike in cases of coronavirus was noted, with over 600 households affected by the lockdowns in Iloilo City. The deployed soldiers were from the 61st Infantry Battalion. As of August 25, 2020, here are the districts with households under lockdown: Lapuz, Jaro, Mandurriao, Molo, Arevalo Meanwhile, Barangay Rizal and Estanzuela were put on total lockdown last August 18, 2020.

Malay government has new protocols for motorcycle back-riding

Back-riding on motorcycles has been allowed by Acting Mayor of Malay Frolibar Bautista through Executive Order (EO) No. 043. Under the order, one back-rider is allowed and he or she must belong to the same household as the driver. Both are required to wear face masks and safety headwear at all times. The government also encourages back-riding for personal use only and does not require riders to use face shields [2].

Travel Updates: Commercial flights resume at Kalibo International Airport

Aklan Governor Florencio Milaflores ordered the resumption of commercial flights at the Kalibo International Airport. Under EO No. 028-A, the flights are only for transporting locally stranded individuals (LSIs), returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs), and authorized persons outside of residence (APORs) to the province. Meanwhile, airlines can accept passengers on the return flights regardless of classification considering medical certificates are provided. The airlines that were allowed to operate at the airport are Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia [3].

Health Updates: Three Iloilo hospitals reach full capacity

The rising COVID-19 cases in Iloilo City have caused three hospitals to temporarily stop accepting COVID-19 related admissions due to full capacity. These hospitals are St. Paul’s Hospital in Iloilo City Proper, Iloilo Mission Hospital in La Paz District, and Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC) in Mandurriao District.

In an advisory from St. Paul’s Hospital Iloilo, the hospital will continue accepting non-COVID patients. Iloilo Mission Hospital also released an advisory similar to St. Paul’s Hospital Iloilo, while WVMC noted that both non-COVID-19 and COVID-19 cases cannot be admitted in the hospital for now [4].
