It has been a challenging year for Boracay, especially for the locals and residents who were affected by the island’s closure. Yet, the islanders remain hopeful for the new year to come. With the changes and new regulations following the island’s rehabilitation, the New Year celebration in Boracay is highly anticipated. The question of whether it will be grander will be answered this week. Here too are other stuff you should expect on the island on the last days of 2018 and the beginning of 2019.

Weather: Unstable weather

A blend of sun and clouds and a couple of showers can be expected throughout the week. The last days of 2018 will be a bit gloomy especially during the morning. New Year’s Eve may also become partly cloudy with a couple of showers and thunderstorms. Yet, the sun is expected to come out on the first day of the year. However, the remaining days of the week will still be dim. Strong wind with a couple of showers and thunderstorm may also be expected. [1]

Traffic News: Heavy traffic expected due to influx of visitors

This week is the super peak season in the island. With the anticipated influx of tourists, heavy traffic is also predicted. You have to be a little more patient especially since some portions of the main roads on the island are still under construction. If you want to avoid long queues at the port, you should also go a little early from your hotel to not miss your flight.

Security beef up

The Philippine Coast Guard will deploy additional personnel in Boracay to help ensure the safety of tourists going and out of the island [2]. Aside from the Coast Guard, more police personnel will also be stationed in various locations on the island. The additional security force is also to ensure smooth flow of passengers in Caticlan Jetty Port due to the holiday season. Aside from tourists, the port is also expected to serve passengers who are home for the long holidays.

Number of compliant accommodations increase; Boracay fully booked for New Year

The number of compliant accommodation establishments in Boracay continues to increase. As of the latest count last December 17, there are already 285 establishments which bring a total of 10,076 rooms on the island [3]. This number is expected to increase as the accreditation process continues. With the New Year celebration, most of these compliant hotels and resorts are fully booked.

Increased water rates

Starting January 1, water rates in Boracay will increase by 18 percent [4]. The increase will apply to consumers of Boracay Island Water Company. While it will not be shouldered directly by tourists, they are still advised to practice water conservation. Most hotels on the island encourage their guests to help in conserving the island’s resource.

Tourists reminded of island’s anti-littering rules

Following the island’s rehabilitation, local ordinances like anti-littering have been intensified too [5]. Stricter implementation of the ordinance is imposed. Tourists are therefore reminded to be responsible of their trash.
