How can you safely vote during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The pandemic has brought changes to the upcoming national and local elections.

The 2022 elections are just a few days away. Since the pandemic is still ongoing, there will be differences in how the elections work compared to the usual procedures years before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Last April 25, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) said that health protocols will be significantly observed and monitored at precincts during the election day to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 among voters.

Standard safety protocols like wearing of face mask and social distancing will be strictly reinforced. Vaccination cards or QR codes will not be required. Medical frontliners will be deployed to get the body temperature of voters before entering their respective precincts.

What to Expect During the 2022 Elections Under the Pandemic, Elections

Compared to the previous elections, precinct capacities will be lower this coming election—with only 10 voters allowed inside [1].

In addition, a separate precinct will be allotted for symptomatic voters. Senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and other vulnerable individuals will also be assigned to a designated precinct sector [2].

This will be the first time the Philippines will have its first elections during a global pandemic. Health experts are wary of the election’s aftermath—with some warning of a possible surge in May.

There are currently over 65 million registered voters in the Philippines, with the most voters coming from CALABARZON [3].
