No COVID-19 surge in Baguio despite tourism reopening under Alert Level 1
The latest health data in Baguio didn’t record any increase in COVID-19 infections despite the high traffic of tourists and return of new normal
tourism under Alert level 1, according to Mayor Benjamin Magalong.
Baguio City was one of the heavily hit areas in Northern Luzon during the height of the pandemic from 2020 to 2021, which resulted in the area limiting access to leisure tourists. Baguio City tourism reopened gradually under Alert Level 1, and last February, it removed its daily tourist cap in time for the Panagbenga Festival. This tourism event has been postponed for two years due to the pandemic. As of March 15, Baguio City has recorded an average of 8,000 to 9,000 visitors daily—which is more during holidays. By March 14, there were only 21 active cases of COVID-19 in Baguio City [3].
78% of the target population vaccinated in Ilocos
The Department of Health Center for Health Development in Ilocos announced that the area has reached 75% of its target fully vaxxed population that prepares residents for the new Alert Level 1 normal protocol in daily activities and tourism [4].
According to the DOH-CHD, there are now over 430,000 fully vaxxed individuals in Ilocos Norte; over 500,000 fully vaxxed individuals in Ilocos Sur and La Union; and 1.9 million in Pangasinan.
The remaining population that is partially vaccinated is 3.6 million.
