This week in Bacolod, the weekday will have cloudy but sunlit skies, while the weekend will see rain. It's better to bring raincoats and rain boots to keep yourself dry in case the streets might be flooded again. In relation to the recent floodings, Lone District Representative Greg Gasataya has requested the Department of Public Works and Highways to inspect the city’s drainage projects.
Meanwhile, the continuing threat of the coronavirus (COVID-19) resulted in a cancellation of major events in Sipalay City. In relation to the scare, Governor Lacson will let local government units decide on letting international ships dock in the province’s ports. Weather Advisory: Low temperature throughout the week
It appears that summer is not yet ready as the temperature will range from 32 °C to 30 °C this week. At night, cold wind will continue to surround the city, bringing down the temperature to 23 °C to 24 °C. A blend of sun and clouds will be witnessed by Bacolodnons during the week. Just bring an umbrella at the end of the week as showers might fall [1].
Traffic News: Inspection for drainage system requested by Gasataya
Gasataya requested the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to investigate the drainage project in the city [2]. The Lone District Representative also asked the DPWH to give recommendations about the drainage system that caused the flood on March 6 in some areas of the city. Due to heavy rainfall and high tide, the drainage system in Lacson Street, Araneta Street, Circumferential Road, Bangga Cory, and other areas resulted in flooding. More than three barangays were forced to evacuate, according to Executive Assistant Jose Maria Vargas of Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO). Two people were found dead after they were swept away by the flood, including a 5-month old baby.
Travel Updates
LGUs to decide on the ban of foreign vessels
Governor Jose Eugenio Lacson will leave the decision to the local government units on whether to ban the entry of international vessels at Negros Occidental ports. He also added that the protocol from the Department of Health should be followed upon the arrival of ships and in dealing with the passengers on board [3].
Meanwhile, Mayor Evelio Leonardia of Bacolod City has issued a new executive order modifying Executive Order No. 11 that banned the entry of international vessels. The new order, Executive Order No. 12, states that any vessel arriving from China, Hong Kong, and Macau can enter the ports in the city provided that the strict directives from the Department of Health (DOH) are followed. This new order was made to follow the orders from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), which reviewed EO No. 11 and determined that it is not in accordance with the DOH circular [4].
Sipalay’s major events will not push through
Because of the continuing threat of COVID-19, Sipalay City’s 19th Charter Anniversary major events are canceled [4]. Gina Montilla-Lizares, mayor of Sipalay City, issued an executive order stating the cancellation of four major events during the festival on March 26 to 31. The celebration will still continue, but only small events and gatherings will be held this year.
The opening ceremony, all sports events, the 10th Barongoy Fishtival, and the “Banda Diri, Banda Didto” drum and lyre competition are suspended to ensure the safety of Sipalaynons and guests. Meanwhile, the 8th Burangoy Tourism Kite Festival has been moved to April since it is an award-winning festival and one of the biggest in Western Visayas.
