Most of Bacolodnons this time of year are rushing to stores in preparation for New Year’s Eve. Luckily, the weather will cooperate. Meanwhile, sidewalk vendors are also thankful since the holiday season started as they were allowed to trade in the downtown area of Bacolod. For travel needs, the Ports Authority in Iloilo has provided ‘Malasakit’ help desks for passengers during the holiday season to ensure safety and comfortable travels. For meat lovers in Bacolod City wary of the swine flu scare: don’t worry, abundant supplies of safe-to-eat meat products are available in the province. This is confirmed by the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO). To get all the details, read on.

Weather Advisory: Sunny and pleasant weather this New Year

Bacolodnons will enjoy pleasant weather this start of year. Celebrating New Year in the City of Smiles? The sunny weather means you can plan outdoor activities! Since most of the days this week will see sunshine, the roads will be safe to travel. It is still advised to bring the necessary stuff like emergency kits and food while on the road. This week’s weather temperature in Bacolod City will range from 30°C to 31°C [1].

Traffic News: Sidewalk vendors permitted to sell, but must follow the rules

Since the start of the holiday season, sidewalk vendors have been allowed by the authority to trade at the downtown area, but on the condition that they strictly follow the rules [2]. Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia said that police should ensure that the sidewalks remain free from obstruction, but they could be given consideration by the authorities because of the holidays. He also hopes that vendors will not abuse the said leniency.

Colonel Henry Binas said that vendors should expect the authority to strictly implement the rules after the Christmas season. There are also concerns about rule violations that need legal attention.

Travel Updates

To provide travelers with safe and comfortable travels this holiday season, "Malasakit" help desks are established at port terminals in Iloilo. This program is part of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade’s directive [3]. The help desk shall provide assistance, including directions and schedule of trips.

Captain Erlin Benliro of PCG-Iloilo said that five of Iloilo's major ports have established these help desks. These are manned by personnel of the PCG, Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), police, and local government officials.

Supply of meat products in Negros Occidental enough

Despite the ongoing parties and fiestas that would possibly continue after New Year, an official of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) said that the supply of meat products in Negros Occidental remains steady [4]. Consumers might have become more wary of buying meat products since the scare from the African Swine Fever (ASF).

When it comes to the price, PVO reported that almost all commodities remain steady. This excludes chicken which increased by P0.3 per kilogram. Dr. Ryan Janoya, head of the Animal Health and Meat Inspection Services of the PVO, said that consumers will expect that that the prices will start to move up starting next week until the end of the month.
