This Week in Bacolod (November 17 to 23, 2019)

Although the weather will pretty much improve in Bacolod City, there will still be rain showers and thunderstorms starting from the middle until the end of this week. There are more interesting things to be done indoors while it’s raining, like calling a friend on a rainy afternoon to have coffee or reading books. This week’s temperature will range from 30 °C to 32 °C [1].

Admittedly, traffic situation here in Bacolod is better compared to the traffic conditions in Manila. But if you drive around the city, you will notice that there are street lights and other traffic facilities that need to be replaced to better the traffic flow.

To resolve this issue, the Bacolod City Council created a resolution asking the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to donate their unutilized analog traffic signal facilities. These traffic facilities include lanterns, lamp posts, bulbs, and similar materials that the MMDA had acquired since the 1980s [2]. Since these facilities were acquired a long time ago, particularly the analog traffic signal facilities, they have been decommissioned and have no more foreseeable use for the MMDA.

To serve the public better, the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City will be rehabilitated starting 2020 [3]. Currently, the Negros Occidental provincial government has tightened the security inside the park. The park’s security division now limits the people going inside the premises and they only allow visitors during office hours. As per Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz, all vehicles heading inside the premises are also now being required to be registered at night.

One of the plans include the construction of a perimeter wall near a creek, situated at the far side of the park. All illegal structures inside the premises will also be cleared to maximize the area. The rehabilitation will start with the repair of the facility’s track. A parking area will also be constructed inside the compound as per Diaz.

Diaz also revealed that this coming 2023, Negros Occidental will host the Regional Athletics Meet and Palarong Pambansa. Thus, this rehabilitation project is part of the province’s preparations for the said national sports event. He also stressed that private organizations are still allowed to use the facilities during the rehabilitation but there must be a balance on the usage.
